Why can't I lose weight despite exercising?

I train regularly, but the scale won't budge — that's one of the most common things we hear. At Fabryka Ruchu in Rzeszów, we know this frustration well, and we know it's usually not about a lack of willpower, but about a few specific, easy-to-miss causes.

Underestimating calories and "grazing"

The most common reason is simply eating more energy than you think:

  • Snacks on the go — nuts, bars, coffee with milk and syrup
  • Liquid calories — juices, sweetened drinks, alcohol
  • "Healthy" foods without moderation — even nourishing food has calories
  • Bigger portions than we realise

It's easy to unknowingly cancel out the deficit you built during training with one extra snack.

Cardio only, without strength training

If your plan is purely running or cycling, you may not be using its full potential:

  • Strength training builds muscle and supports your metabolism
  • It helps protect muscle mass during weight loss
  • It influences recomposition — your body changes shape even when the scale stays put

You'll find more about this relationship in the article Strength training vs weight loss.

The scale is just one number. Measurements, the mirror and how your clothes fit often show progress the scale can't see.

Stress and too little sleep

Chronic stress and lack of sleep can effectively get in the way of weight loss:

  • They increase appetite and cravings for sweet or fatty snacks
  • They lower your energy and willingness to move
  • They make it harder to recover after training

Take care of your sleep and find ways to release tension — it's not a luxury, it's part of the plan.

Plateaus and less activity outside training

After a period of losses, the body can seem to "stall". This often happens because:

  • We quietly reduce movement outside the studio (fewer walks, more sitting)
  • The body adapts to the current plan
  • We feel more tired and move less throughout the day
  • At that point it's worth reviewing your habits and watching the trend over a few weeks, rather than immediately eating even less

Health and hormonal factors

Sometimes the lack of results comes down to causes that diet and training alone won't solve:

  • Hormonal disorders or thyroid problems
  • Certain conditions and medications
  • If nothing changes despite sensible efforts — consult a doctor

The tips above are general in nature and don't replace medical advice.
